Start with orientation, not colour
Before choosing anything, note which way each window faces. West-facing windows take the harshest afternoon sun and benefit most from blackout or thermal-lined fabric. North-facing rooms receive gentle, indirect light all day and can carry sheers alone without overheating.
Layering is the practical answer
The most useful setup in a UAE home is two layers: a sheer for daytime privacy and softened light, and a blackout or dim-out curtain behind it for heat control and sleep. This gives you three distinct settings from one window rather than forcing a compromise.
Fabrics that hold up
- Blackout polyester blends — best heat rejection, widest colour range, most fade-resistant.
- Linen — beautiful texture and drape, but fades faster in direct sun. Best on shaded elevations.
- Velvet — excellent light blocking and sound absorption. Heavy, formal, ideal for majlis and media rooms.
- Performance sheers — engineered to resist UV degradation far better than standard voile.
Do not skip the lining
A thermal or blackout lining behind a decorative face fabric protects the fabric from UV, improves insulation and makes the curtain hang better. It is the single highest-value upgrade on any curtain order.
